Big secrets!

It has occurred to me that I can blog my little heart out, about things that are a secret......as long as I don't publish the post! So, I will continue on with my blogging, and then publish all of these later on. How much later? Well, after all our friends and family hear about this.

That's right folks, we are expecting our second little bambino! We weren't joking when we said we wanted our kids close together. Count them up, it's going to be 15 months between the two of them. We're going to get all the bottles, binkies, and diapers over with. I am 7 weeks and 3 days as I type this, and Eric and I have known for about 2 weeks. I've had bloodwork that came out great, as well as two ultrasounds. The second was far enough along to show a heartbeat, which means the risk of miscarriage is now less than 5%. So, lots of good news around these parts. My "guess date" is April 13. Hopefully this one will come early too, and we'll get a March baby! I'm thrilled to not be pregnant in the middle of the summer. Although, we were kinda hoping for at least a June baby. Our fertility is obviously off the charts.

We'll be finding out what this baby is, probably around the end of October. When we do, we'll have a gender party! What's a gender party you ask? It's a fabulous idea I'm stealing from my friend Tara in Charlotte. At the ultrasound, we'll look away when they scan between the legs. The tech will put the result in an envelope, which we'll take to a baker. The baker will add either red or blue dye to the yellow cake mix, making the batter either pink or blue. We then have our "party" which is a cookout with family and close friends. For dessert, well, cake of course! Eric and I will cut the cake and peek in, to be the first ones to see what we're having. Then we'll announce it to everyone! I can't wait to have this party, I think it'll be a really fun time.

The Final Countdown

We are down to just two weeks before we move, and I can't believe it. I'm in utter shock. How did this happen? When did I ever agree to move back to SC? Oh well, it's too late to change my mind now, so I'd better hope for the best. But in all seriousness, I'm getting kinda excited. I already have my first Bunco party planned (attending, not hosting). Plus a trip to She weekend, plus a wine and cheese party. It helps that we've already got a trip back to Charlotte planned- to watch the Bills and Panthers! It's on October 25th, and I'm going to buy Eric tickets for his birthday. It'll be fun for him to see his hometown team play here in the Queen city. We may also have to come back for Octoberfest. That's usually a humdinger.

Eric is with Drake, in Florence, until later tonight. I miss my boys. I work tonight, so I won't see them until in the morning. Insert sad face here. I need some Drake snuggles!!! He is such a sweet little man, and just so content all the time. I really don't know what parents do with high needs babies. We are so lucky to have such a happy baby!

Do You Remember?

I hardly remember Drake ever being this tiny.

An update on the Drakester

All good news from Drake's appointments this week. First and foremost, his sweat chloride test was negative, which mean he does not have cystic fibrosis. This was obviously our biggest worry. We were impressed with the GI office. First we saw the nurse practitioner, then the nutritionist, then finally the doctor. When looking at Drake's weight trends since birth, side by side with when he started formula, they believe that his decrease in weight gain is associated with going on formula. The higher fat content of my breastmilk (probably d/t my love of french fries) was really plumping my little man up. Since my supply took a nosedive, so did his rate of weight gain.

Another contributing factor is Drake's "excessive happiness". The kid rarely cries and complains. Not even to eat. Which, we've discovered, is a problem. Instead of giving him four bottles a day, we've increased it to six. We basically are offering him bottles, even without him acting hungry. Anything to get in the extra calories. And the fact that he is loving solids helps get in some extra calories.

We're thrilled that there isn't anything wrong with our little dude! Now I just have to get over my sadness and guilt of not having enough milk for him. Just seeing how often he smiles and laughs certainly makes it better though!

Just a couple of photos from tonight, that show how close Drake is to a real crawl. He's plenty mobile, rolling and scooting all around. The true crawl should be happening any day now. That's certainly going to be bittersweet. Time to childproof!

This child seriously has the most beautiful blue eyes I've ever seen!
He's starting to get those knees up under him.
Getting MAD at his inability to propel himself forward.
Pushups!
More pushups!

Update

All of the tests and studies done on Drake's poop last week were negative. No c-diff, no e-coli, no rotavirus. Plus whatever else they ran. I think Mommy's instincts were right; that loose stool was simply associated with the little respiratory virus he had. Now to wait and see the GI specialist on Wednesday.

Missing Charlotte...

There are SO many things I will miss about Charlotte. I know it's going to be a huge adjustment moving to Florence, with lots of homesick nights. Eric has promised that we can move back if I'm miserable in a few years. I'm hoping for an easy transition, and find solace in the fact that I can be back here in just 2 1/2 hours.

The first and foremost thing I will miss is my friends! Eric and I have an amazing support system of friends here, that rivals none other. There is nothing like my Sugars. Through the past couple of years, we've lost a couple to Seattle, California, and Columbia. And now me to Florence. Thank heavens for girls trips where we all still get to throw down together.

I'm really gonna miss the food here. Eric and I are beginning to accept that the food is probably going to be hugely disappointing in Florence. I am already having withdrawal from Bombay Grille, the best Indian food ever. Then there is Sole (best spanish ever), and Hef's (best blue cheese burger ever). Of course, there are all the really nice places that we don't frequently eat at, but it's nice to have them around if we want a good steak. Like Morton's, Ruth Chris, and the place across from Brio. The grocery stores are an entirely different issue. I LOVE EARTHFARE!!! I am really going to miss it, and all the TajMaTeeters. (That's a huge Harris Teeter for those who don't know). I would do a back handspring if Florence got an Earthfare.

The shopping, oh the shopping. I live 5 minutes from Southpark mall, enough said. Nothing will ever compare. I love Nordstrom's like a fat kid loves cake. I'll miss having a Babies R Us nearby, plus a HUGE outlet mall. Now I'm going to have to drive an hour and half to a Carter's outlet. That is a tragedy my friends.

I'm hoping that after six months in Florence, I will find places to eat and shop at, that enable me to survive. Thankfully there is always internet shopping!

A New Day....

So today is a new day, and the ignorance and immaturity displayed by my blog readers yesterday is gone. As you may have noticed, my comments are now moderated. Untrue and inaccurate information will no longer be added to this blog via other's uneducated comments. Thanks to my friend Kim (the commenter, not the crazy one) about your remarks regarding our c/s rates. Your accuracies are appreciated. A couple of months ago someone sent me the rates for each individual hospital in the Charlotte area. I sure wish I could find that. It was eye-opening to say the least. And as far as beer being natural, I can unfortunately attest to that. My dear husband has a beer brewing kit, and LOVES to make his own beer. So do his brother and BIL. I say unfortunately, because it really stinks when he's boiling it in the kitchen. But it was nice to see how it was made. And no, there weren't artificial chemicals added.

I love Mothering magazine. My Mom got me a subscription to it for Christmas this past year. Yes, it's a very "granola" magazine. It's so nice to sit down with a glass of lemonade, and read letters and articles by women who choose to live their lives the way I do. It's nice to read about support for extended breastfeeding. That's totally something I would do, if these boobs would continue to make milk. I love all the advertisements in the back. It gives me all kinds of great websites for buying products that interest me. As a matter of fact, my nephew's first birthday is coming up, and I found a great website/toy company that I'll be ordering from for his gift. I'm excited! Of course, it will be a wooden toy of some sort. All plastics propaganda aside, they simply last longer.

Drakey is on a walk with Eric right now, but it's just too hot out there for me. I get to spend tonight in the frigid antarctic, AKA the operating room. Oh, what fun. We are trying to work in an extra bottle a day for him, and it went great today. Unfortunately, if he does have a true malabsorption problem, all the bottles in the world won't fix that. The kid L-O-V-E-S sweet peas. As in, tries to eat the entire spoon. It's so cute=)

We went to these big consignment sales in Charlotte last weekend, and scored big! I got Drake a Halloween costume (pea in a pod) for $5. I got a little activity table he can stand at (with a little help for when he tumbles) for only $15. And the big winner was a jumperoo that hangs in the door way, for only $5. He also L-O-V-E-S- his jumperoo. I'm talking squeals and screams in it. He especially likes when the dogs are near it, because he can propel/bounce himself closer to them. He is on a personal mission to pull Lucy's eyes out. She thinks he's comical, but we really have to watch them. Linus wants nothing to do with Drake, which surprises me. We really thought it would be the other way around.

It was brought to my attention that someone called me a self-righteous, spoiled bitch. The person who brought it to my attention thought I'd be really offended. Hardly! I'm well aware that I can be self-righteous at times. And yes, I am VERY spoiled. My parents spoiled me growing up, and now my husband does. Of course, being that I went to school and obtained my Masters, and secured a great job, I also spoil myself. Hell, I'm proud of that. And I plan to spoil my children. And I've been called a bitch ever since I learned to speak up and voice my opinions. That just comes with the territory. But I'd rather be a bitch any day, than a meek and intimidated woman with no mind of her own.

Today's sermon is over......

Oops, I did it again. (I love Britney Spears.) And apparently, I did do it again. What, you wonder? Well, obviously my opinions written on my blog have offended a "friend". I use the term loosely here. I'm sure there are people who disagree with and are offended by things I write about. Luckily, it's my blog, so I can write what I want. Freedom of speech and all that. Fortunately there is also freedom of choice, as in choosing to not read my offensive blog. Everyone has that right. I usually blog about Drake and what he's up to. And post his adorable little pictures. But I also enjoy blogging about things I am passionate about. Heavens knows there are plenty of those! I'm in general a very passionate and opinionated person. Those traits are probably what feeds my desire to blog, and the enjoyment I get from it.

In my last post about Drake's weight, I wrote about feeling bitter since I feel I've done everything "right". I even put the word right in quotations in that post. I don't HAVE to explain myself. Or expand on every little thing. But "right" in that context meant right for me, and right for my family. I've said it before on this blog, and I'll say it again. Just because I've decided that something is right for me and my family, doesn't mean that it's right for others. It also does not mean that people who don't do the same things I do, are in the wrong. For example, my cousin Ashlee had C-sections with both her daughters. They were medically indicated to save her and her child from further complications. I, obviously, don't think she's in the wrong for her C/S. My friend Tarah chooses to formula feed. She's decided it's what best for her and her family, and it works for them. She is a wonderful Mommy who loves her girls wholeheartedly. She's no less of a Mom just b/c she formula feeds. My SIL Bridget started solids with my niece at 4 months. She also has decided it's what best for her and her family. She also loves her daughter with all her heart, and she is indeed no less of a Mom because of when she starts solids.

Every Mom simply does what is best, in their opinion. I'll share this little quote with you, in that it's one of my favorites. "There are no medical facts, only medical opinions disguised as facts". That quote makes me smile, because it's true to an extent. Obviously, there is plenty of medical fact. But for a lot of "facts", you can find research studies to dispute the "fact". Take cloth diapering for example. There are plenty of articles claiming it to NOT be beneficial for the environment, since it requires water to wash them so frequently. Or take breastfeeding: there are articles out there saying that it's NOT best, due to all the stuff mommies consume in their diets that can be sent to the babies. I, as a Mommy, choose to believe what I want. So does every other Mommy. We choose what we believe, and then we choose how that affects our family. Freedom of choice is a beautiful thing, isn't it?

I share a lot of things on my blog to hopefully open peoples eyes to an alternative way of looking at things. Or to educate others to non-mainstream ideas. Kinda like when I wrote about why I use midwives, and what a doula is. They aren't necessarily mainstream, so it was nice to shed some light on that for people who read my blog.

Back to the issue at hand. My blog obviously offends a girl I went to high school with, to the point that she herself wrote quite the blog post. In an effort to make this blog post of mine more clear, I am copying and pasting hers below. To avoid copywrite issues, it's from www.kmkandherday@blogspot.com. Her words are below, in bold and italics.

Some People are Just Mean.

Okay.

I shall remain silent no more. Of course, I typically do TRY to keep my mouth shut when someone says something just plain ignorant. If you are a health care "professional," it is not okay to call someone a crackhead whore! It just isn't. Not everyone that has a c-section opts for it, or schedules it in their day planner. There ARE medical rationales for having to have a c-section, hints the word "emergency," which is so often synonymously used with it in charts. Whichever birth a women partakes in to have her child, it may just be natural TO HER. I have 2 extremely healthy children, one 7p 11 ounces, and another 8p 4ounces.
They had all of their immunizations, with ZERO effects! If that makes me "granola" oh well, I'm not a damn cereal bar! Both of my children were diapered in disposable diapers, and had no diaper rashes, and were both potty trained at a year. They lack developmental delays, or any of any sort, and yes, they drank out of plastic bottles! Katelyn walked at 8 months, my son at 12. Freedom of choice is what makes this such a great country to live in. Also, I am sorry but if you had your tit hanging out in a public place feeding your child or not, I wouldn't want my son seeing it. What you consider natural, to me is indecent to my child. (and yes, I breastfed)..by the way..are they even real? If not, how about organic? I'm sorry, do you eat all non-chemical foods, or beer? Are you having detrimental side effects. Did you wear disposable diapers, eat organic baby food, and go without immunizations, unlikely!

Besides, we all know you must have them to enter school! What REAL evidence is there that plastic bottles, or immunizations harm any child? Some "granola" website, which is monetarily gaining from their sale of such "organic" products. I am sorry, don't you give drugs for a living? (because that is what anesthesia is right?)...just plain hypocritical. My children both ate solids before 6 months, and neither has a problem with "childhood obesity." Perhaps each persons' individual way of mothering and reering a child is just as good as your own, since you have so much experience..what..months?

Now, like I said, Kim has obviously had enough of my blog. Luckily she knows all about freedom of choice making this country great, and isn't required by law to read my offensive blog. Geez, good thing!
Yes, I am a healthcare professional. And yes, the term crackhead whore sufficiently describes a patient from time to time. If I'm doing a C/S, its necessary for me to know my patient is a crackhead whore. The crack (and other random drugs) can potentially interact with drugs I give. Her being a whore (paid prostitute) puts her at risk for communicable diseases that ARE my business if her blood, vomit, and whatever else ends up on me. I work in a Level I, urban trauma center. Yes, I do get some sweet women with adorable little husbands for C/S. I also get the other end of the spectrum. And when THAT end of the spectrum comes in, and has a beautiful healthy child, I'm bitter and jealous. ESPECIALLY WHEN FACED WITH THE POSSIBILITY THAT MY CHILD HAS A SERIOUS ILLNESS. Fault me for my feelings, fine. But they are my feelings and I'm entitled to them. I'm allowed to feel how I feel. (Thanks Michelle!)
Being a healthcare professional, I am also aware that there a variety of reasons to have a C-section. They can at times be life saving for both mom and baby. I'm all for those. I'm happy to do them, and happy when everyone turns out well. But I'm gonna go way off on a tangent here, and talk all about the C/S that DO annoy me. First and foremost, a purely elective c/s for women who simply don't want to labor. They don't want to "hurt" with labor. They don't want their vajayjay stretched out. Whatever the reason, they wuss out of birthing a child the way our bodies are intended, and take what they believe is the easy way out. If only they knew. It pisses me off that it's even an OPTION, when women who go into hospitals with natural birth in mind are told they DON'T have options. I also can't stand when people demand early c/s because they are "tired of being pregnant". Are you kidding me? Who isn't tired of being pregnant in the third trimester! That reasoning is just a joke in my opinion. C/s for butt first breech presentation are one of my current pet peeves. Canada and some European countries are following research that says a butt first breech delivery is NO RISKIER than a c/s. The US doesn't follow that yet, because let's face it. Our OB's don't know how to deliver breech babies anymore. And they make a lot more money from a c/s than a vaginal delivery. It's just really sad to me that I can't "choose" to have a breech delivery, when the woman next door can "choose" a C/S because she's heard contractions hurt. Let's see, what other c/s annoy me.......Oh yes- the repeats done because an OB uses fear to talk the patient into it. Uterine rupture is such a small risk (1% or less I believe), yet women choose a repeat c/s because they "don't want to die during labor". We do a ton of c/s at work because of FTP; Failure to Progress. I have personally renamed this failure to push. Being induced when a body just isn't ready, laid on your back, then made numb from the chest down......and then we wonder how a failure to progress came to be??? If women would wait until their bodies were ready, stay upright, and be able to push effectively, our c/s rate would go way down. I'm seriously disturbed that it's over 30% now in this country. It makes me sad. Like I said before, I'm all for a honest to goodness medically indicated C-section. But the others just make me sad:-( I'm off my C/S tangent now. Back to your regularly scheduled programming.

It's great that women can choose to view their birth, no matter how it goes, as natural. But let me say for the record, that as someone who birthed a baby completely natural without so much as a damn Tylenol, I will be offended when someone calls their intervention filled birth "natural".

Choosing to fully vaccinate a child is as far from granola as possible. It's the other end of the spectrum from granola. I'm always thrilled when children are vaccinated without injury. But the fact remains that there ARE children with documented vaccine injuries in this country. No one knows what the true long term effects will be from each and every new vaccine that pops up. While I'd rather my child not be a guinea pig, I couldn't care less what other parents do. Just because Drake only gets one vaccine at a time, doesn't mean that the kid who gets 6 vaccines at once is any worse off. That kid's parent (hopefully) researched and made her own educated decisions.

I get annoyed beyond belief listening to "My child x,y,z, and they are just fine." I don't make ANY of my decisions based on one example. I prefer statistically significant research studies with large numbers of participants.
I don't breastfeed Drake with my "tit" hanging out in public. But I also refuse to cover him up. He's eating, not molesting me. I suggest to parents that if your child questions what I'm doing, to use it as a teaching moment and explain that God created our bodies to sustain our children, long before formula was around. It may be a perfect introduction into that birds and bees talk.
And can I just say how unbelievably honored I am that anyone would think my boobs are so fabulous that they are the handiwork of a plastic surgeon?!?! These are all mine, and I agree that they are quite nice. But after breastfeeding all my kids, I probably will need that plastic surgeon. I wore sposies, drank forumla, got all my shots, and I'm still brilliant. But it was a close call=)
Vaccines are not required to enter schools in all states, if you claim religious exemption. It's quite easy to do, at least in NC and SC. FWIW.......

If I didn't have such a cute little man occupying so much of my attention, I'd be happy to pull up some articles that explains precisely which plastics, and what ingredients of vaccines are dangerous. But alas he does indeed keep me busy. I suggest to a mom who honestly wants to know these things, to do her research just as I did. I have two books I am particularly fond of. "Healthy Child, Healthy World" is a book all about green living. "The Vaccine Book" by Dr. Sears contains unbiased factual info about vaccines. Those are some of my go-to books when I have a question about something. Great info in them!

Generally, anesthesia involves giving drugs, lol. It's what I do, I enjoy it, and I'm well compensated for it. It hardly makes me a hypocrite just because I choose a granola and green lifestyle.

I have never once said that other peoples way of mothering isn't as good as mine. I have, however, frequently said that I choose what's best for MY family. Not all families, but mine. It's what works for us. No, we are not completely green and all into healthy living. I personally love the quarter pounder with cheese combo at McDonalds. It's my very favorite fast food! We take it one day at a time. And I take this blog one post at a time. I speak my mind, and I'm usually brutally honest. It's chock full of my opinions. I think it's unfortunate that Kim feels I insinuate that any Mom who doesn't do the same things I do, is a bad Mom. That isn't the case at all. I don't generally label people as bad mothers, except maybe the crackhead whore.

With all of that said, I hope that none of my family, or true friends feel I have belittled their parenting. It's not my intention in this blog. But I will not change how my thoughts come out on here, or edit them to avoid hurt feelings. It is what it is, and if you don't like it, then don't read it.

Can I get an Amen?

Weight Update

I took Drake into the pediatrician today for a weight check, and to discuss his loose stools and diaper rash. Instead of gaining weight in the last month, he has lost an ounce instead. Dr. Dorsey had the same opinion I did, that it's time to refer Drake to a pediatric GI specialist. I had the forethought to take a dirty diaper in with me today, so they sent a bunch of tests off on his stool. Dr. Dorsey is deferring all lab ordering to the GI specialist, to avoid Drake being stuck two separate times. He also ordered another non lab test that we'll have done on an outpatient basis at the hospital. We see the GI specialist next week, and hopefully after all the blood work he orders, we'll have some answers. Differential diagnoses range from very simple things, to very serious diseases.

We are obviously hoping and praying that there is nothing serious wrong with our little man. In better news, he remains extremely happy. I'm glad that whatever is keeping him from gaining weight doesn't make him feel poorly.

I appreciate any and all kind thoughts, but please don't call me to discuss this. I really don't feel like talking about it, other than what I put on here.

Just seeing "FTT" written on his referral sheet was about enough to send me over the edge. I don't understand why my sweet little man is "Failure to Thrive", but it breaks my heart. I'm just happy that he has no idea he's "FTT". For all of you non medical folks, FTT is a very general description for babies/kids who have poor weight gain.

Part of me is pissed off, because I feel like I've done everything "right". I obeyed all the rules when I was pregnant. I had a natural childbirth that hurt like hell, to spare my child the effects of all the drugs and complications associated with epidurals and C-Sections. I breastfeed, even though it hurt in the beginning, and isn't always the most convenient thing. I make some of my own baby food, to spare Drake all the chemicals and crap in the store bought food. I have him play with wooden toys, to avoid the dangers in the plastic ones. But alas, none of these things have protected him. So here I sit, pissed off at the fact that plenty of women who HAVEN'T done these things have perfectly healthy babies. Tomorrow night, I'll probably go to work and do a C-section on some crackhead whore (literally), who has a perfectly healthy child.

I guess my parents were right. Sometimes life just isn't fair.

Sweet Peas

Well, Drake hates carrots but seems to like sweet peas. We tried them tonight for the first time, and he actually would open his mouth for them! But only about a tablespoon, then he got tired of it. I really hope he continues to enjoy more solids!

Forgot to add

I forgot to add two things Drake is doing on his big 7 month birthday celebration. He can stand and hold on to something (like our coffee table), if we put his hands on it. He also has started this new thing whenever I hold him- he rubs/strokes whatever skin he can get to. It's obviously a comfort thing, and it is SO sweet. I just love it.

As far as the photos on my blog, they are all available on my photobucket account. You can get to that by clicking on one of the Buffalo photos that's on my facebook. That is how I intend to make all my photos available in the future, by posting a link on facebook. I hope that will work for everyone, since I think pretty much every person on the planet is now on FB:-)

I don't go back to work until tomorrow night, and I'm excited about spending lots of time with the Drakester until then. I miss him when I work:-(

7 Months Old! (Wednesday)

Drake is now closer to a year old than he is to being a baby! I am not happy about this, but at the same time it's great to see him grow. It's amazing to see all the lightbulbs going off for him. He:

-Rolls all over, with a purpose. For example, if you put a toy he wants nearby, he will roll and scoot until he gets it.
-Is close to crawling, but can't quite get his fat little legs up underneath him. We are enjoying the last little bit of his immobility.
-Drinks water from a sippy cup
-Is weaned to only 4 bottles a day, but still nurses whenever he wants.
-Is still being breastfed! I'm proud of this one. I intend to let him self-wean.
-Is very vocal and laughs at everything.
-Is starting to pay a lot more attention to the sign language we use with him.
-Enjoys oatmeal for breakfast, and veggies with lunch and dinner. He hates carrots.
-Sleeps about 10-12 hours a night. He may wake up once, but we just let him fuss a couple of minutes until he goes back to sleep.
-Is becoming a lot more consistent with his feeding and napping routine

A weight update is coming next week!

Our NY and Canada trip

Well, I think the photos will speak for themselves. We had a good trip, although it wasn't as restful as I would've liked. I guess restful vacations will reappear when we leave our kids at home, lol. Because the flights were so cheap, my parents and aunt & uncle came up as well. My mom had been up there before, but the rest hadn't. They enjoyed the falls, exploring buffalo, and cool Canadian nights by the fire. Drake spent lots of quality time with his cousins, and we snapped lots of photos. We attempted a photo shoot with a 3, 6, and 10 month old. We were obviously out of our minds.

My favorite photo of the trip! The ENTIRE family. Inlaws, outlaws, everyone. Good peeps, good times.
I love this little face. He is SUCH a sweet boy.
My parents on the beach- they had a blast! I'm so grateful that they are close with Eric's parents. It made the trip a blast.
This is when Drake met Lacey for the first time.....Grandma had a lot of fun with them!
Grandpa and Drake on the beach

Gavin and Drake with the same pose while sporting their golf outfits. These two crack me up.
All the babies chillin after waking up one morning. See how sweetly they hold hands? They did that all on their own!
My sweet MIL blowing out her candles--we surprised her!
Drake and Lacey- the two bald chunkers:-)
Gavin had a thing for trying to make the little kids "face-plant".

These sure are three cute cousins!
Lindsay and Lacey, my Mom and Gavin (who aren't technically related), and Grandma Kirsch with the Drakester.
A valiant attempt at a family photo. Ha ha.
After putting Drake in his pajamas one night, someone noticed that he matched the furniture on the porch. Pretty cute huh?
Grandma and Grandpa Kirsch have a swing that the kiddos just love. This was Drake's first time in a swing, and he really seemed to like it. Although this photo doesn't exactly look like it;-)

Drakey showing Lacey who is boss. I can't wait until she gets bigger and can give it right back to him. We had to separate the two;-)

Going for a walk on the beach, with Drake in his mei tai carrier. It puts him out like a light! I don't know how parents survive without a carrier of some sort.
Us with Eric's parents, obviously at Niagara Falls. I've probably been there 5 times now. It's just as pretty as the first time.
Eric and I with my parents, and my Aunt Maggie and
Uncle Stoney.
Me with my awesome SIL's and our cute kiddos. It's going to be so much fun to watch them all play together, during summers at the cottage.

Diapering and Dining

So, diapering and dining. That's pretty much all Drake's life consists of. The only two other ingredients are sleeping and playing, but that's another blog for another day. Drake is almost 7 months now (next WEDNESDAY!!!), which I just cannot believe.

He is on solids, and thoroughly enjoying them. There is an older post about why we started at 6 months, which you could search and find if you really want to know. And to add to that, I read in Parenting Magazine yesterday, that starting before 6 months also increases the chance your child will have problems with childhood obesity. Anyhow, so he's on solids and loves it. He starts veggies soon. That's gonna be lots of fun- I've heard it makes the poop smelly and all kinds of funky colors. I make his food with the Beaba food steamer/puree. It is a fabulous kitchen gadget~~~I highly recommend it. I don't make his cereals, because the store bought ones include iron. I buy them organic from Earthfare, rather than making my own and having to give him a vitamin. I think that's about it for dining. In another couple years, I'll probably finally get around to posting photos of him eating carrots for the first time.

Now, diapering. Our little family enjoys cloth diapering. No, it's not gross. I personally find disposables disgusting. Our cloth dipes don't stink anywhere close to a sposie. And if you could feel how soft they are, you just may be convinced too. Did you know that the main ingredient in sposies that is there for absorbency was made illegal in the 1980's? However, it's only illegal in tampons, not diapers. So it's okay for my child, but not for me? Yehhh.....right....

Anyhow, back on track here. Drake has some really cool diapers. Especially since I took all my prefolds to NY and Canada when we went to see Eric's family. Lindsay, Eric's sister, cloth diapers as well. She had the genius idea from this message board that we frequent, to tie-dye our prefolds. To give a brief synopsis on the types of CD, a prefold is an "old-school" diaper that wraps around the baby and requires a cover. We used Dylon, b/c it supposedly doesn't bleed as bad. It was SO much fun, and now our kiddos have cute prefolds as well as pocket diapers. Our SIL Dianna did her burp cloths, and they turned out really cute too. We're trying to convert Dianna to a CD user for her next kid:-) So, I've included some pics for your viewing pleasure below.

We asked for a clothesline, and voila.....a clothesline appeared. Thanks to Eric's dad Denny! We had to have a place for everything to dry. These are a bunch of the prefolds.

The red dye turned out to be hot pink. Lacey has lots of cool pink diapers, and Drake is getting in touch with his feminine side.
Lacey's onesie- too cute!
Some from the first day. That's a fitted diaper in the middle. And one of Gavin's burpcloths.
One of the keys to tie-dying is to wear old clothes and an apron. And gloves! That stuff gets everywhere. My dear husband requested a photo of me in an apron.
My stash from Peekaboo Bottoms. I LOVE that store. I will be going back there every summer. It's about 20 minutes from the cottage in Ontario Canada. They have a website you can order from too! If you become their friend on facebook, you can register for free diapers. I got some Blueberry velour/minky pocket diapers which are absolutely heavenly. Plus some containers for Drake's food that I make. Oooh- and a Thirsties Duo cover. These just came out, and I'm a big fan. I also got the big man an amber teething necklace, which works great. And,...........WOOL SHORTIES!!!!! I am very excited to be venturing into wool covers. Despite common misconceptions, wool is very soft, cool, and breathable.
The final product of my cooking, in the freezer. Something about seeing homemade, organic baby food beside breastmilk makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. And quite proud!!!!!!
The carrots, all done and ready for the freezer.
So, I got the wrong type of peas, so that was a no-go. But here are my carrots, squash, and zucchini~~~all ready to be steamed and pureed. Eric did the washing, peeling, and dicing. Only the carrots get peeled, because of their nitrates. The others keep their peel for the nutritious value. You wouldn't believe all the info out on the net about making your own babyfood. I'm apparently not the only mommy who has "gone granola".
Drake's first taste of rice cereal. He loves it. He's already moved on to oatmeal cereal. The veggies start Sunday!
